Job Description:
Airbus Defence and Space is looking for a Principal Metallurgist to join our team in Stevenage to work on spacecraft within the Materials and Process department.
You will provide technical solutions to materials related issues which arise during the design, manufacture and test of flight hardware and the team mission of assuring correct materials qualification for mission specific requirements.
SECURITY CLEARANCE: The successful candidate will be subject to a BPSS check in order to undertake related work in accordance with business needs.

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE TEAM
- Providing Materials and Processes (M&P) support to project & equipment procurement
- Critique qualification, test plans and data analysis of data and approve test reports
- Lead non-conformances responses which will include investigations into failures, which will require a good understanding of laboratory techniques
- Support and lead R&D activities
- Authorise changes to Parts Materials and Processes (PMP) specifications and associated documentation
- Chair Materials and Process Review Boards (MPCB) and manage technical performance of subcontractors, suppliers and in-house manufacturing
- Support, coach and guide junior Materials Engineers, Graduates and Interns
ABOUT YOU – Your Skills
- A good understanding of spacecraft equipment would be ideal HOWEVER, we will consider candidates from other industries where strong experience is held of related metallurgical technologies.
- A strong understanding of metallurgy (aluminum, titanium and stainless steel) is essential
- You will hold a Metallurgy, Materials Science, Physics degree or related degree with a proven track record of industrial experience
- Demonstrable skill for conducting qualification test programmes for specific applications
- Demonstrable experience of various metal joining methods (welding, brazing, fasteners)
- Knowledge of metallic additive manufacturing technologies would be an asset
- Practical application of Spacecraft Parts Materials and Processes (PMP) requirements - ECSS.Q.ST.70C would be an asset
- Ability to analyse and interpret data, draw conclusions and make recommendations
