General Die- CNC Machine Operator
Job Description:

With more than 120 operations and approximately 20,000 employees worldwide, Precision Castparts Corp. is the market leader in manufacturing large, complex structural investment castings, airfoil castings, forged components, aerostructures and highly engineered, critical fasteners for aerospace applications. In addition, we are the leading producer of airfoil castings for the industrial gas turbine market. We also manufacture extruded seamless pipe, fittings, and forgings for power generation and oil & gas applications; commercial and military airframe aerostructures; and metal alloys and other materials for the casting and forging industries. With such critical applications, we insist on quality and dependability – not just in the materials and products we make, but in the people we recruit.

PCC is relentless in its dedication to being a high-quality, low-cost and on-time producer; delivering the highest value to its customers while continually pursuing strategic, profitable growth.

In 2016, Berkshire Hathaway, led by Chairman and CEO Warren E. Buffett, acquired Precision Castparts Corp.

Perform close tolerance production machining. Setup and operate all machine tools including CNC and numerical controlled and tracing equipment to perform machining operations such as turning, boring, milling, etc.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Obtain job assignments from Supervisor or Production Planner.
  • Obtain process sheets and tooling and/or blueprints and templates.
  • Determine setup required
  • Interpret blueprints or sketches and process sheets to determine machine and set up required.
  • Set up work in machine, using hoist or hand-controlled overhead crane.
  • May require assistance on heavier pieces.
  • Measure and mark area to be machined.
  • Set controls to operate at proper feed, speed, and depth of cut, etc. and use coolants as required.
  • Use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, level protractors, squares, verniers, gauge blocks, dial bore gauges, depth gauges, profileometers and vidi-gauges in setting up and machining work to required tolerances.
  • Check dimensions against process sheets, blueprints, or sketches or with template, to ensure that work is done to required specifications.
  • Stamp and record heat code, serial numbers or other required numbers that have been removed in machining process.
  • Maintain machine and work area to be clean and in orderly condition.
  • Notify Supervisor or Leader of any improper operation of machines.
  • Perform related duties as directed.

KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING:

Requires use of job knowledge acquired over a two-year period to set up and operate all Die Machines. Must read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and process sheets. Uses wide variety of precision measuring instruments. Must have knowledge of shop mathematics. Set up and operate tracing equipment. Be familiar with general numerical control theory and how system operates.

SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires considerable judgement in setting-up and operating Die Machines.
  • Requires considerable judgment in setting-up and operating all manual equipment.
  • Requires making decisions involving the use of some ingenuity and initiative.
  • Recognize deviations from normal machine operation and take appropriate corrective action.
  • Frequent use of physical skills to operate a wide variety of machines and tools, working to close tolerances.
  • Good coordination to operate several controls simultaneously.
  • Requires deft touch, quick and precise movement.
  • Care required in machining forgings to prevent damage to the product where the loss value would be significant.
  • Must exercise considerable care in operation of complex machines to prevent damage where cost of repair would be large.
  • Must exercise a reasonable amount of care in performance of duties to avoid idle time or wasted effort of relatively low value.
  • Inattention or carelessness in setting up or operating machine could cause temporarily disabling injury to others.
  • Moderate physical effort required.
  • Some set up work may be heavy.
  • Close visual concentration required to read precision measuring instruments and to observe cutting operations.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND POSSIBLE HAZARDS:

  • Normal die machine conditions.
  • Even temperature, good lighting.
  • Work areas crowded.
  • High pitch noise on some jobs.
  • Constant exposure to minor injuries from rough edges, flying chips and flash.
  • Infrequent exposure to disabling injuries during set-up operations and from overhead and boom cranes.
