Successful candidates for this position will be a Senior Manager of Systems Engineers who support Civil Space Systems (CSS) within the Tactical Space Division (TSSD) at Northrop Grumman Space Systems located in Redondo Beach, CA. This position offers the opportunity to lead an engineering team of 2 Managers and 40-50 Engineers who support the cutting edge of spacecraft design to support Human Spaceflight missions.
The Manager is responsible for leading a multi-skill and diverse team of engineers to develop, design, analyze and oversee the production, test and operation of spacecraft systems. The integrated team will be comprised of senior staff architects, mission systems engineers, mission analysts, and early career staff. The Manager must provide direction to supporting Systems Engineering (SE) managers and help guide SE teams to ensure a common goal that aligns with the Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) program business goals as well as support of overall Civil Space Systems (CSS) goals for TSSD. The Manager is expected to develop and maintain a team capable of completing mission goals established by the division’s strategy, including business development, proposal writing, IR&D and programs. The Manager will conduct career planning and performance reviews with direct staff, perform compensation and bonus planning, and process promotions. The Manager will represent the Systems Engineering organization by reviewing proposal technical and price baselines, attending and supporting milestone reviews, auditing SE Earned Value baselines and performance, review SE risks and burndown plans, support failure boards and program monthly reviews, and audit program metrics.
The Manager will report to the SE Director for CSS and is expected to work independently toward predetermined long-range goals and objectives in a self-initiated manner with additional alignment guidance as appropriate. The Manager is expected to determine and pursue courses of action necessary to obtain desired results related to SE process and staffing. Completed tasks are checked through consultation and agreement with others rather than by formal review of a superior.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Provide support to the engineering directorate within TSSD and lead Systems Engineering capabilities for the Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) program as it aligns with all Civil Space Systems (CSS) programs and projects.
Hire, develop and maintain a talented team of Systems Engineers which can support all aspects of the CSS space missions lifecycle
Generate requisitions and actively participate in recruiting talent for CSS Systems Engineering
Lead or support HALO space segment technical reviews and customer visits
Responsible to write monthly status and technical performance reviews and reports for the performance of Systems Engineering on HALO
Responsible for fostering a collaborative environment across the widely spread geographic locations of the Systems Engineering work force
Represent systems engineering by providing oversight over the implementation of and execution of systems engineering principles and processes to ensure programs are executable and ensure desired performance
Conduct career planning and performance reviews with direct staff and department level reviews, perform compensation and bonus planning, and process promotions
AZSPACE
Basic Qualifications:
Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD security clearance
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related STEM discipline with a minimum of 14 years of experience or a Master’s degree in technical fields and 12 years of experience with at least 5 years in a management or related leadership position
Proficiency in related engineering programs, Microsoft Office or equivalent document generation programs, Microsoft SharePoint or equivalent collaboration tool, Matlab or equivalent computational too
Experience in systems engineering functional management, and demonstrated leadership experience
General understanding of hiring process and ability to make key hiring decisions
Experience balancing workforce versus budget and balancing SE staffing for multiple programs
Experience developing career development plans for staff at various experience levels
Experience with personnel management including conflict resolution
Experience with earned value and program planning
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience managing diverse technical teams towards a common goal: Conducting performance reviews, Evaluating staff performance, Resolving conflicts among staff members
Experience with the complete space mission development life-cycle, especially for NASA human spaceflight programs
Early mission architectures and concept development, including CONOPS & mission planning
Proposal technical writing, gate reviews and SE labor estimating
Establishment of requirements and engineering management plans
Review and refinement of spacecraft, payloads, and ground segment designs
Planning and support of space vehicle Integration and Test activities
Multi-discipline space engineering experience interfacing with team members in any of the following fields: Avionics for Command and Data Handling design and development, Electrical design at a card, component or system level, FPGA / Processor design and development, Flight & Ground Software design and development, Avionics for Power distribution system design and development (Both High and Low Voltage Bus Design), System simulators, flatsats and testbeds
Mechanical design and development (Understanding of both launch loads as well as space docking loads, Understanding of deployment mechanisms)
Thermal control system design and development (Thermal control techniques in both a vacuum and/or ambient condition)
Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering approaches, tools and methods in a space mission or related aerospace project
Experience with agile methods for Systems engineering as applied to the development, production and operation phases of a space mission
Salary Range: $180,600 - $271,000
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidates experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
