Job Summary
As a Principal Systems Engineer, you will interact with other team members representing a wide range of disciplines to develop complex Electro-Optical Systems. You will work with customers to define system requirements and operating concepts, develop the systems architecture to meet the requirements, and guide the design team to execute the systems architecture.
Job Responsibilities
- Interface with Customers and Stakeholders to understand their needs and constraints and review customer specifications and requirements
- Generate consistent, complete, correct, and operationally defined highest level system requirements, including cost requirements
- Perform trade studies, performance analysis, and cost-benefit analyses to determine the best means to meet the system requirements
- Partition the system into subsystems and components, and document component and subsystem specifications and material requirements
- Communicate the architectural vision
- Leads design engineers to ensure a robust implementation of the system architecture that meets schedule, cost, and performance requirements
- Analyze/troubleshoot designs as necessary
- Specify and evaluate supplier components, subsystems and services
- Support the program design to cost and design for manufacture requirements
- Generate acceptance test requirements
- Prepare and present proposals, technical reports, position papers, and reviews (both internal and external) as needed
- Provide budget, cost and schedule input for design assignments
- Communicate clearly (written and oral) with manufacturing, supply chain, program management and the customer as required
- Provide technical expertise and assistance to other engineers and support personnel.
- Interact with technical management, other professionals, technicians and support personnel to coordinate, recommend and confer regarding technical activities and progress.
- May mentor and coach the work of others as assigned.
Qualifications
- Master of Science Degree in Physics or Engineering (BS Degree in Physics or Engineering is acceptable with additional years of relevant experience)
- 10 years minimum experience including 5 years minimum as a System Engineer and/or Systems Architect
- Experience in electro-optical system design for high-performance imaging systems
- Experience in testing of electro-optical systems ranging from visible through long wave infrared
- Integration of multi-sensor payloads including allocation of manufacturing tolerances for design for manufacturability
- Experience with performance modeling for electro-optical systems
- Understanding of mechanical, electrical, and optical designs and components, and their interactions in visual and infrared imaging systems
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Self-starter who pays attention to detail and takes responsibility for his/her work
- The ability to work well in a team environment and lead the activities of team members toward an overall goal
- Ability to complete a technical project independently and mentor and coach other engineers
- Familiarity with PC applications like Windows, Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint, MATLAB, and MathCAD
Additional Desirable Qualifications
- Strong technical writing skills for reports, proposals, and technical specifications
- Understanding of infrared detector materials, and device operation and modeling
- Understanding of optical materials and fabrication techniques, including optical coatings
- Familiarity with optical test and characterization equipment
- Familiarity with infrared lasers, with emphasis on those used for rangefinders and target designators
- Ability to understand and review component and system level drawings
- Familiarity with modeling software like NV-IPM, NVTherm and Modtran
- Familiarity with DOORS
U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
