The Northrop Grumman Military Internship Program (NG-MIP) is an approved SkillBridge Program under Dept. of Defense Instruction 1322.29 .The NG-MIP program is an opportunity for transitioning service members to gain valuable civilian work experience through an individual internship during their last 6 months of service, for up to 180 days. The Northrop Grumman Military internship Program is open to all ranks and experience levels. SkillBridge participants are not eligible for compensation from Northrop Grumman, as they continue to receive military compensation and benefits as active-duty service members.
Responsibilities for this internship position are:
Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC) has developed the Northrop Grumman – Military Internship Program (DoD SkillBridge) utilizing the DoDI guidance for SkillBridge. During this program the service member will be on-site at his or her host company performing an individual internship in an entry to mid-level career type role. The service member will be on the job training supporting a work schedule equivalent to 40hrs per week. Outlined below are the Goals, Objectives, and Outcomes for the program.
Goals– Provide transitioning service members fellowship-style job skills training during the last portion(s) of their military commitment. This program is specifically designed to offer internships that result in the potential to transition to a full-time opportunity as the conclusion of the training. Interns will serve as a pipeline for high-speed, motivated military candidates into NGC.
Objectives - Service Members who complete the Intern program will be highly-trained, capable, future employees that align to the specific needs of the organization and are prepared to meet the NG mission “Defining Possible” on Day 1. This program provides a comprehensive internship experience including professional development, networking with leadership, and training specifically focused on NG leadership principles, company history, customer/stakeholder engagement, product and service overview, and core job responsibilities.
Outcome – Offer transitioning service member a rewarding opportunity to join the Northrop Grumman team.
DoD SkillBridge Eligibility:
- Has served at least 180 days on active duty
- Is within 12 months of separation or retirement
- Will receive an honorable discharge
- Has taken any service TAPS/TGPS
- Has attended or participated in an ethics brief within the last 12 months
- Received Unit Commander (first O-4/Field Grade commander in chain of command) written authorization and approval to participate in DoD SkillBridge Program prior to start of internship.

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Mission Defense Cyber Team has an opening for a Cybersecurity Systems Engineer supporting the Sentinel program based out of San Antonio, TX campus. A Cybersecurity Systems Engineer (CSSE) assess/evaluates the customers’/stakeholders’ cybersecurity requirements to decompose, derive, and refine with clarity the system’s cybersecurity requirements to drive the built-in cybersecurity protections to the architecture and design. The CSSE also guides/supports the security layout / architecture and influences the security tools selection and development. The CSSE evaluates/assess the proposed and realized implementation to identify security risks and verify the cybersecurity protections from the design are realized and integrated. The CSSE guides/supports the development of verification efforts to ensure the cybersecurity protections / capabilities are functional, effective, and complete. A CSSE supports the definition of security governance, and risk management.
As a Cyber Systems Engineer on this team, you will have the following responsibilities:
- Work within the Cybersecurity Engineering Group to provide technical decisions and guidance to enable timely, high quality product deliveries and flight test events that meet mission requirements
- Partner and collaborate with other program systems engineers across Integrated Product Teams to accomplish program requirements and meet mission objectives
- As a member of a team of specialized NGMS cybersecurity engineers, support the development and enhancement of Launch and Missile Defense systems
- Participate as part of an extended team of US government, Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, Northrop Grumman Space, and supplier cybersecurity practitioners across multiple program locations
- Ensure weapon system compliance with all contractually obligated cybersecurity standards and guidance, including but not limited to CNSSI 1253, DoD 8140, DoD 8510, and AFI 17-101
- Propose and design systems architecture changes with traceability to requirements
- Provide Cyber implementation guidance and oversight across technical teams
- Develop and document technical standard engineering processes and procedures as needed
- Participate in team reviews of technical requirements, design and implementation plans prior to deployment of computer systems, digital communications systems, networking devices, computer architectures, and computer security penetration tools and techniques
- Participate in cybersecurity assessment activities and review cybersecurity assessment methods, plans, procedures, and reports
- Provide input to program milestones and metrics, adhering to cybersecurity-relevant plans and schedules
- Identify problems and research technical solutions to resolve these problems
- Apply analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to issues or studies concerning the efficiency and effectiveness of Cyber Security implementation
- Solve complex problems across disciplines in an Agile, DevSecOps environment
Basic Qualifications for a Cybersecurity Systems Engineer
- Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of experience in Systems Engineering, Cybersecurity Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science; Master’ degree with 0+ years of experience in Systems Engineering, Cybersecurity Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science; or 6 years’ experience in a cyber system engineering related fields in lieu of a degree.
- Direct experience utilizing NIST 800-160 system security engineer and/or the system development life cycle
- Direct experience in one or more of the following Systems Engineering activities: system requirements decomposition/derivation/flow down/traceability, architecture, high-level/detail design, implementation, integration and test, and/or verification & validation.
- Direct experience supporting the development of RMF assessment and authorization artifacts in accordance with NIST SP 800-37.
- A current/active DoD Secret clearance.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Top-Secret clearance.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain Special Access to the program.
- In possession of a current IASAE II certification (CISSP preferred) in accordance with DoDI 8140 or able to obtain within six months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications for Cybersecurity Systems Engineer
- IASAE level III certified (ISSEP, ISSAP) in accordance with DoD 8140.
- Top Secret/SCI Security Clearance with additional preference for SAP briefing on the Sentinel program.
- Software Assurance experience.
- Expertise with Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) and related tools such as DOORS and Cameo
- Knowledge of Cyber Security Engineering practices, network technologies, DoD system development life cycles and methodologies, and insight into information technology infrastructure management/monitoring and applications
- Expertise with containerized software systems in accordance with DoD DevSecOps Reference Design
- Experience innovating in Cybersecurity Accreditation processes and procedures in a multi-certification (Cyber, Nuclear Surety, etc.) context as part of a Digital Engineering Environment
- Experience authoring and maintaining critical program documents such as Cybersecurity Strategies, System Security Plans, Continuous Monitoring Plans, Security Assessment Plans, etc.
- Experience in a Systems Engineering role with responsibilities in the planning, designing, implementation, testing, and delivery of a system with Cyber/Information Assurance requirements
- Excellent communication (written and oral), negotiation, coordination, and interpersonal skills
- Proven collaboration with program managers and customer representatives to meet program objectives
- Experience managing and directing efforts following an Agile and DevSecOps process model
- Proven success analyzing, estimating, and implementing solutions to complex problems spanning multiple engineering disciplines
- Ability to calmly negotiate challenging program requirements, strategies, and conflicting constraints among a large and diverse group of program stakeholders.
This position in is contingent upon clearance.
Salary Range: $87,200 - $130,800
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidates experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
