About us:
The Propulsion Manufacturing Engineering team provide all the ME preparation activities in support
of the spacecraft propulsion system manufacture and integration. The systems vary in complexity for
differing Scientific and Telecom missions.
A team of 10 engineers support this work including process engineering and the Industrial readiness.
Working within our team you will have the opportunity to learn about the production of these
bespoke systems from supporting the design phase through all the phases of the build to completion
for delivery. At the end of the internship you will have a good understanding of the processes used
to manufacture these systems and the control and checks that ensure reliable production.
What you will be doing:
Gain an understanding of our key processes within the Propulsion area and support the implementation of process improvements:
Propulsion pipework forming and orbital welding;
Precision bonded or mechanically fastened assemblies;
Thermal equipments (components and finishes);
Thermal harness (small wiring looms).
Support our digital transformation:
Use of 3DX CAD package. Able to manipulate and capture images;
Construct work instructions for the operational teams within the Delmia software and import to the Apriso production tool;
Develop standard process operations for use across different projects;
Understand the Material Requirements Planning (MRP) system – assess efficiency saving for ME, end to end process.
ME general activities:
Use of jigs and Fixtures to aid assemblies;
Value Stream Mapping analysis;
Manufacturing process flows;
Measurement of standard process times;
Lean manufacturing techniques including 5S, root cause analysis, Kaizen improvements;
Support Lessons Learned exercises;
Support Practical Problem Solving (PPS) initiatives;
Ergonomic assessments;
Cleanroom Layouts.
Requirements:
Our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement. Please inform your graduation date on your application.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:
You should be enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering or other related courses;
Familiar with MS Office like applications; Google Suite experience would be very beneficial;
Able to use CAD software and being comfortable with the digital and 3D work packages;
Interest in the practical side of Engineering;
A good technical and logical mindset who can apply their training to review and optimise our production processes and digital outputs;
Confident communication skills – Able to document proposals and trade-off ideas.
SECURITY CLEARANCE: Eligibility to gain UK SC Security Clearance OR You will be subject to a BPSS check (including a criminal record check).
