Position Summary
The Material & Process Engineering (M&PE) team provides Parker Lord Manufacturing and Product Design groups with the capabilities necessary to deliver dynamic solutions to aerospace, industrial, and other markets. This position in the M&PE team is focused on pre-bond metal preparation, primer/adhesive application, and post-bond operations including paints, coatings, and lubricants. This position in the M&PE team provides opportunities to develop and apply skills in improving rubber-to-metal bonding techniques, chemical process lines for cleaning/etching/corrosion resistance, internal specifications that control materials/processes, and validating replacements for raw materials. It requires working closely with mechanical design engineers, quality engineering, supply chain, and manufacturing process engineers to ensure new materials and processes meet the needs of new and existing applications and are manufacturable. Preexisting knowledge/expertise in one or more of these areas is desirable and on-the-job training will be provided. Problem solving skills will be used daily to enhance our understanding; define, plan, and coordinate projects; control resources; and assume technical leadership responsibilities to meet customer needs. Candidates must be highly motivated, work seamlessly with peers, learn continuously, and logically assess complex problems under tight schedules. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, as is the ability to present information to diverse groups across the organization. Travel will occasionally be required.
Responsibilities
- Provide production support in areas of responsibility.
- Lead discovery and implementation of new manufacturing processes, bonding methodologies, pre/post-bond processing methods, and chemicals for rubber-to-metal bonded products.
- Defining/optimizing metal preparation procedures, selecting adhesive materials/processes, creating internal specification requirements, and ensuring conformance with external requirements.
- Work closely with Design teams to reduce manufacturing risk and with New Product Introduction teams to meet deadlines for new part approvals.
- Actively invent, develop, and disseminate new technologies/solutions in support of projects and customers.
- Document research/discoveries and present key findings.
- Review, revise, and write technical specifications.
- Navigate technical specifications to assess impact and ensure compliance.
- Thoroughly assess manufacturability and scaleup of new/replacement chemicals, inks, paints, coatings, elastomers, processes, etc.
- Develop material characterization techniques that better predict product performance.
- Support peers and other departments in brainstorming and troubleshooting efforts.
- Submit detailed service requests for routine testing to be completed by the M&PE Technician team.
- Assist in the execution of specialized laboratory testing on an as-needed basis.
- Evaluate new raw materials (chemicals, paints, polymers, adhesives, etc.) for the purpose of qualifying additional sources and/or improving capabilities with regards to safety, performance, consistency, cost, etc.
- Travel occasionally required for supplier or production support of NVH facilities.
Qualifications
Requirements:
- Degree in Science or Engineering required with 4 years relevant experience.
