This position serves as an electronics engineer within one of the multiple National Airway Systems Engineering (NASE) teams or subteams providing advanced engineering expertise in support of one or more NAS systems.
Duties
Incumbent provides comprehensive knowledge of engineering principles, theories, and concepts to analyze and evaluate assigned NAS systems and is looked to for guidance and resolution of complex problems related to the introduction of new technologies into the NAS and problems associated with continued operation of commissioned facilities. Plans and accomplishes highly complex and challenging projects/programs and other work activities under the minimal direction of a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced engineer.
As the Electronics Engineer, he/she plans, manages, organizes, coordinates, and integrates work on multiple projects to accomplish organizational/strategic objectives related to National Airspace System (NAS) systems while maintaining cost, schedule, quality and performance. Provides electronics engineer experience and team leadership for a project/group of electronics engineers and computer scientists responsible for second-level engineering support of assigned systems involving hardware, software, technical documentation, scientific and direct engineering support essential to the safe and reliable operation of the FAA’s National Airspace System (NAS).
Applies experience and comprehensive knowledge of electronics engineering, as well as an understanding of new technologies and methodologies, to solve complex problems primarily in electronic circuits, circuit elements, equipment, systems, and associated phenomena concerned with electromagnetic and/or electrical information to improve the reliability, maintainability, and safety of assigned NAS systems/equipment and facilities. Analyzes and studies performance requirements of electromagnetic and/or electrical information for purposes such as data communication, computation, sensing, control, measurement, and target tracking to improve the operational performance of assigned NAS systems/equipment and facilities.
Broad policies and objectives provide general guidance for addressing issues, but allow considerable discretion to develop new and innovative approaches. He/she uses prior experience to solve problems which requires modifying established guides, devising new approaches, applying existing criteria using novel techniques, and drawing conclusions from comparative situations. Provides guidance to lower-level staff to solve difficult technical issues. Resolves all but unique technical problems without the intervention of management or a more experienced engineer.
Applies comprehensive knowledge of agency policies and priorities in order to effectively evaluate and affect changes to existing technical directives, processes, and procedures. He/she prepares technical documentation related to facility or system modifications and maintenance to provide national guidance for field specialists across the agency to management for final approval.
Applies knowledge in acquisition law, configuration management, and project management to determine the best avenues to study systems issues and implement solutions throughout the NAS.
Serves as organizational representative with a wide range of division, LOB, agency and external groups in meetings related to the technical aspects of improving the performance and effectiveness of assigned NAS systems, new system development, and resolution of complex problems associated with the NAS operation.
He/she works with more experienced engineers or managers in the strategic planning process to address current business or operational needs and to meet long range agency requirements; and investigates new or emerging technology involving state-of-art hardware and software systems to resolve equipment obsolescence, or to provide new/enhanced operations or capabilities. Collaborates with key stakeholders such as the program office, other second-level engineering organizations, in-service management office, and the logistics center.
